PASTOR BOB JACKSON
We so often associate the month of February with Valentine’s Day. As kids we would hand out simple cards to our classmates that often asked the question: “Will you be My Valentine?” After marriage, Valentine’s Day begins to lose its sparkle. But that doesn’t have to happen to you. We have planned another romantic weekend for you and your spouse at the beautiful Farmstead Inn in historic Shipshewana. Friday & Saturday, February 10th & 11th will be this year’s Sweetheart Retreat. Friday evening you can dine with your sweetie alone, or you can join other couples at the fabulous Blue Gate Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. After dinner, the rest of the evening is yours to spend as you wish. Saturday morning will begin with a continental breakfast provided by the Farmstead. Our marriage session will start at 10 a.m. The theme for this year’s retreat is “Building Blocks for a Strong Marriage.” Because of the length of the series, we are planning to continue the Building Blocks for a Strong Marriage study for the next 5 Sunday’s during the Christian Life Class time.
Chili Cook-off 2012
This year’s Chili Cook-off will be Wednesday, February 15th at 6 PM. We had such a ball at the Chili Cook-off last year that it was decided we need to do it again. Peggy Lant is the defending champion for the title. We thought that Willie’s Famous Chili had it in the bag but it turned out that Peggy took the prize. So who will be the winner this year? Will it be you? It can be red chili or white chili. Please put your chili in a crock pot and name your chili. You must sign up to enter the contest by February 12. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners. We will also have hot dogs and drinks will be furnished.
Spring Is Just Around The Corner - Pastor Larry
I am writing this article the last week in December because I am off work for 12 days for Christmas and would like to say Praise the Lord for the mild winter we have had so far. I just hope it continues through January and February. As a youngster, I used to like it when we had lots of snow. Building forts, igloos and have snow ball fights made for lots of fun. How many of you remember the storm of the century in 1978. I was 22 years old when that occurred and at that age it was still kind of an exciting event but at 56 years old, I don’t think I would enjoy it as much.
When I think of February, there are 3 major events that occur. The end of the NFL Football season, the beginning of NASCAR and Valentine’s Day. If you are not a sports fan, football and NASCAR probably doesn’t mean that much to you but Valentine’s Day should be an important event for all of us. I know Valentine’s Day probably exists because of the floral and card industries but anytime we get a chance to tell someone how much we love them and how special they are to us should be taken advantage of. After all, that is what God has done for us in giving us the Bible. All of scripture reveals to us how much he loves us and the sacrifice he was willing to make to reveal that to us. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” As I think about it the Bible is God’s Valentine’s Day card to us. PTL So this Valentine’s Day and every day let us show our love to those that God has placed in our life. Amen
God is so good, all the time! We often hear this and it is so true! I am very pleased with our Children’s program and each one of the caring, gifted and dedicated volunteers. God is doing amazing things through His people and I cannot cease to give Him praise. We have begun our “second semester” in teaching the next generation of leaders in the church. Last Sunday I was told by a parent that their child really liked our program and how much they enjoy coming to church. Praise God! First step accomplished, the children like to come to church!
I must admit, I was also convicted when the younger kids knew all the Old Testament books of the Bible. Immediately, the pre-teen class began learning the books as well. I was totally blessed last Wednesday evening when we were having our Bible drills in class and the girls were remembering where the books were located in the Bible instead of using the Table of Contents. Again, God is so good, Praise God! Our time and dedication in teaching the children is one of the most important things we can do on this earth. Our efforts will not go void in God’s Kingdom. Jesus loves the children and we do too.
We have begun the process of developing our mentoring program. We have a couple of adults that will begin spending quality time with some of our youth. That is what mentoring is all about, giving our time. In doing this we can help the young person grow closer to God, guiding them with their decisions in life, developing them to becoming better people in this world. You as a role model and mentor can help them walk through the task of discerning their unique gifts, passions, talents and strengths and encourage them to use that gift to glorify God. A mentor will also be committed to praying for the young person through all of life’s situations. We have hope because we believe in Jesus. Let us share that hope with the next generation.
“Family Time” AKA Youth Group by Pastor Travis
This a time of change a time for discovering who we were created to be. However, we as teens too often define ourselves by who the world tells us we are. Without realizing this, we also try to define our relationship with God by how the world tells us it should look like. I’ll tell you the world wants nothing to do with God. Soon our definition of “Christianity” looks more like what we can get from God instead of what we can give to God. Didn’t Jesus say it is better to give than to receive? Is Jesus dying on the cross for our sins not enough for us?
God at Work
As a teacher in the Niles Community Schools, I see the need first-hand when colder weather starts and so many kindergarten through fifth grade students do not have warm clothing. Teachers and staff try to keep a look-out for any student that repeatedly does not have a coat, boots, or a hat and gloves, and then we privately ask them if they could use any of those items. At Ballard, there is a cupboard in the office where we store donations of these items and other extra clothing, and we can go and search for something appropriate at any time for these students. Thanks to the blessed donations from First Church of God this year, the cupboard is bursting and so many of the over 700 children that attend Ballard School are now wearing warm coats, boots, hats, and gloves or mittens. Please continue to think of area school children as the snow falls this winter, and know that your generosity is warming them in more ways than one!
This and That We are setting up family photos for a picture directory. There will be a donation requested that will go towards the youth. You will receive a CD with your picture on it. It will be yours to keep and reproduce as many as you like. More information to follow as plans are made.
BIG QUESTION!!! During our staff meeting we were discussing the value of the newsletter. We are always trying to discern whether what we are doing is important and working or is there something else we should be doing and are not. So this is the big question. Do you read the newsletter? Do you find it informative? Do you look forward to it coming out each month? What do you think about just reading it on the internet? Let’s have some feedback. Call me, email me…JoAnn
Nutrition Corner
Well, now that January is history, I wonder how many of our New Year’s resolutions have also become history? Good nutrition is always the key to great health. The more fresh fruit and vegetables you include in your diet the better chance of good health. Maintaining good health is so often taken for granted, especially for the healthy young. The old adage that most of us have used; “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” is true. I have found that eating an apple in the evening, serves as a natural antacid. If something I have eaten is causing indigestion, for me, an apple works to neutralize the indigestion. So if you suffer from indigestion, try eating an apple; because, “An apple a day might keep the doctor away.”
